HMS Sandhurst started life as a 11500 ton merchant ship but by WW1 she had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy and was converted into a Destroyer Depot Ship. Thomas Cowling was drowned while serving aboard her on 16th November, 1916 but as yet there are no further details.
